Preventative medications... Empty Preventative medications...

Post  Cluelesskitty Tue 10 May 2011, 5:57 pm

Of all the preventative medicines I tried for migraines during my "career",
Topamax turned out to be most effective.

I wasn't responding well to antidepressants - in fact they made me worse, Luvox being the worst,
nor any blockers or other kinds of preventives including Sibelium, or Sansert (methysergide maleate).

From alternative therapies - well, the massage help lessen the pain sometimes (if I can bear the touch).

What, if anything, has worked for you?

I've never found a preventative that works...unless you count my botox, though that is hit or miss as you can see by my bad time this month. Propranolol was my worst try...I felt dead on it.

I took Nadalol (generic name Corgard) for years but still got migraines so it was basically a waste of money! I can't remember what else I tried over the years.

I can't remember what else I tried over the years.

Honestly, Ruth lolol - your second nail !!
you are on the roll today, girl Smile

- and who can? I can't either all of them,
come to think of it, we are being pumped with amount of medication
that possibly only the laboratory animals can compete with !
lololol

Perhaps you didn't mean it that way, but you striked quite a great points of observation, Ruth!

A combo of Inderal and Welbutrin worked best, but not well. Am now on only Inderal.

Preventative medications... Empty preventatives

Post  lentils Wed 11 May 2011, 5:11 pm

I tried sandomigran, that worked for awhile, but caused me to gain 20 lbs. I took it until it stopped working. Then
propanolol, which wasn't good for me, because I have low blood pressure to begin with. I was dizzy and sleepy all of the time. Next was amitriptyline. I could tolerate a low dose, but I still got migraines. Botox worked for about 3 years. Topamax worked well and the side effects were minimal. I did lose some weight, about 8 lbs, but that was all. I have tried twice to taper off topamax, but the migraines returned. I have some diamox and I am thinking about trialing it for migraine prevention. But I finally got scheduled for a new neurologist and I think I'll talk to him first. My current neurologist referred him to me when she said she could no longer help me. He is a neurologist/neuropsychiatrist so I'm hoping for for a good visit.

I can't even remember all the preventatives I've tried, most with no effect, a couple with vicious side effects. Off the top of my head the list includes topamax, elavil, botox, butterbur, inderal, depakote, Keppra, another antidepressant that I don't remember starts with a D, someday I'll make a list.

I just started on Cymbalta. I am noticing that the head is better. I think it is because I'm sleeping so well. Instead of being up 5-6 times a night which I've done for years, I'm sleeping all night. I even cut my klonopin dose in half.

I'm not up to full dose on the Cymbalta, I'm at 30 mg. I'm thinking about staying at the 30 since I'm noticing improvement with no side effects.

Also, the Cymbalta is weight neutral, in fact I'm losing a little weight, but that could be because I have more energy during the day.

Topamax works for me.
Inderal/propanlol works short term (3-5 months) but makes me sleepy all the time.
Hoping to try Botox soon
Coma if that was an option
