Teen drinking at home, with parents...

Post  Cluelesskitty on Thu 12 May 2011, 7:02 pm

Interesting article..
But teens who drank along with their parents were only one-third as likely to binge and half as likely to be regular drinkers

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703386704576186380879004132.html

I am not sure how much I believe these statistics,
and certainly being an old school where I was simply told 'children shouldn't drink" I find it hard to imagine
that I would let my 15-16 yo daughter have a drink with us like it was nothing.

A glass of wine with dinner once in a while, perhaps, but letting her drink with us adults as an equal - I don't think so.

On the other hand can't help but see how it does make sense how the parent indeed can help to teach how to drink
responsibly and the way we as children are taught, for exmaple, how to eat fish without choking on the bones,
- show how to handle alcohol.

Still, I have a lot of misgivings... hmm, not sure..

There was study just released that counters this almost 100% claiming that this type of drinking in the family home actually promoted binge drinking and problems with intake.

I always thought it was a good idea to see a healthy role model having a drink or two, so that kids can understand that you can have one or two drinks without being "drunk". My family is from holland, so I was introduced to it early, but I had no interest in it at all...not even through uni.

I'll be curious to read further studies to come.

Well, as a mother I believe there need to be some parent- child rules and borders never to be crossed.

For many reasons - health and authority among them.
I don't think for a 15-16 y.o. growing body drinking alcohol is that healthy for that matter, as alcohol affect bones
and drinking with parents undermines the parent's authority.

Parents should be parents, which mean unfortunately disciplinarians not drinking buddies.

You can tell your child about alcohol and how it affects a body, how try not to get drunk etc
but do we really must drink with kids to teach them all that?

What about sex, then, Wink
so far just talking about it worked perfectly well.

My mantra: I am NOT here to be your friend.

I did not provide alcohol for my children, period. It is illegal. Period. I'm not going to lose my home and my job because I didn't know how to tell my underage child "NO". I am a mother and parent, not a drinking buddy.
