We are hearing horror stories in Oz about the property market in the US. Prices dropping to the point people are pulling out old copper pipe as it's worth more than the house!! Is it really as bad as this??

We are on hold right now. I just don't have the energy to get the house ready to even show. As you know my back isn't the greatest, and this weeks fiasco with my dog has me flat as soon as I get home from work.

So, we're in a holding pattern. Luckily we're not in a position of HAVING to sell. Maybe it would be better if we were. But, my oldest son is a school teacher and will be out of school soon and he said he will help us move furniture, clean the basement ( which is mostly his crap anyway!) so we'll see what happens there.

Marion, it all depends on where you live. Yes, the housing market as collapsed in many places, but we're okay here.

Thanks for asking Risa! Yes, we have had 2 viewings, but have not gotten any feedback yet. We have a Open House scheduled for next Sunday. On that Saturday we are having a Graduation party for both daughters. Not good news as I am heading into the bad weeks soon.

Please send good vibes/prayers my way that I make it through next weekend without a bad migraine. My head is a tolerable 4 today. We are going (my Mom and best friend and I) to see 8 houses today. My first time in to see the insides of houses. The carpet smell was not too long lasting.

I highly reccomend the brand with the Teflon inbedded in it instead of sprayed on at the last minute. Very safe for pets and much less smelly. Thats my update gotta go. My MIL is staying unil tonight. Not a bad visit, but its difficult to have anyone here and my head is making me more grouchy than usual.

I am normally a happy. pleasant person I had a big talk with hubbie about not driving everyone crazy with preparing the house. The girls and I are ready to do him in. I think he got the hint.
Hugs.

Marion, I live in a suburb of Wasington, DC. It is very protected here due to the government providing so much work. Our area is holding onto good prices. The area we are buying in about 1/2 hour way is not doing as well. That is why we can afford a much younger house there! It is very sad if I think about it too much.
Hugs,

Thanks for an update, girls!

And for explaining how the house market works. yeah I suppose it depends where in the state you are.
Some fare better than others. I can't wait for economical rebirth, although I doubt there ever will be such a boom
as it was before - I believe people learned their lesson being careless with finances,
living off credit cards and above their means.
Well, not at the level it was before at least.

Cindy - I already started sending you M protective vibes, which will be turning into healing once the need come,
which I hope will not!

And awwww - The Graduation party - your daughter is graduating, congratulations!!
I love organizing parties, wish I was there and could hep you!

Well have fun everybody and hopefully the open house will bring the buyers!

Have to agree with you Risa that everyone was living beyond their means.

The biggest losers in this crash in OZ have been the 50 plus group who have used the equity in their houses to buy toys. They are now facing retirement with mortgages bigger than the value of their homes which have declined in value.

They were living on the expectation that their houses would keep going up in value.

In my humble opinion those re-draw mortgages are the work of the devil. All of those people would be close to paying off their homes if they hadn't been tempted by the re-draw facilities!!

Thanks for the vibes, Risa. It must have worked, the dull HA is gone this morning. Yesterday I made it through seeing 8 houses. I really liked 3 of them. I wish you were nearby, too Risa. What fun we would have! I hate planning parties, So your help would be most welcome!

Post  Cluelesskitty Tue 17 May 2011, 5:33 pm

Marion, so spot on!
I also think that while the generation who survived the wars and prohibition and thus severe poverty
knew how to save a buck or two,
and first saved then spend, the next one somehow wasn't taught these skills - only how to spend, spend, spend
without thinking of future.

Since I came from country ravaged by corrupt communist system where the store shelves ended empty
after years of the ruthless government ruling, I had to learn how to save money and make from scratch, too
so I was always amazed how my Canadian friends never fixed, for example,
holes in their garment but threw it away and buy anew.

I quickly get over it, though, lol and started doing the same. It's easier.
This however is where the money goes to waste.

Then the credit cards.
You are given one, but nobody really teaches you that really, but really -the CC should be used as
an emergency crutch not the easy way to pay.
There is this program called Smart Cookies I watch once in a while, and it's astonishing how many
and how little people know about their own credit cards.

For example, hardly anyone asked on the street knew what interest they have on their CC
and if they pay any additional fees and if yes, how much is it. One woman was unaware she pays yearly over $1200
in fees on her CC!
$1200 bucks, people! its' a MiuMiu or Manolo Blahnik or Jimmy Choo pair of shoes yearly we say we can't afford!

Another lady signed up for CC promising an airline points with every purchase. Sounds good, eh?
Well not if you sit down and start counting what the CC company actually charges you for using the card
and what it gives YOU in turn.

After adding the high interest on the card, the annual fee of $100, and considering it was only a point
for every dollar or even $5, the lady would have to have spend so much money it would take her two years
to get enough points for her and her daughter to go to Disneyland,
and the charges on the necessary amount spent to get these points
would be higher if she bought the tickets herself! so, there you go.
all fancy schmancy, but if you don't bother read the fine print...

Yet people are signing up for these cards without first sitting down looking over the details.
Why? why aren't' we taught to first do that?

Cindy - I wish that too!

Do you have any idea what you or your daughter want to do for the party?
Will there be a theme?
How many people?
Will there be a buffet, or formal table setting?
Do you intend to use real tableware or paper/plastic (I think the other will be better and spare you a lot of cleaning later)
Do you have a plan for a menu yet?
Do you consider catering?
Fruit plates are always a hit, and very refreshing, and easy to add at any time.

The decorations, if any, can be delegated to your teens.

I can help you make a list of everything if you wish, just PM or email me anytime.

Post  30yrsofheadache Wed 18 May 2011, 4:47 am

Risa, My real problem is lack of time to do much because of the house being on the market. Yesterday 2 people came and I ended up putting the two 70 lb. dogs in the back of the car and driving around for 1 1/2 hours. I got frustrated and decided to run into the HFS for some gluten free items.

It was in the low 60's and drizzling, so they were fine with the windows down a little. The dopes started barking while I was in the store and people were glaring at me when I got back in! They werent hot, just worried about being left. I was gone less than 5 mins... So, my daughter and I will be going to Costco on Friday and try to get most of what we need there.

I am not cooking much. Maybe a GF appetizer and dessert so I have some food. We are getting sandwiches, chips and dip, fruit or veggie platter and assorted desserts instead of cake. No idea of # of people as no one has RSVP'd and I dont have time to call.

The girls put up an facebook invitation and said "bring friends" I also sent out written invitations. So, I will buy tons of food and if it doesnt get eaten, The peeps around here will be eating it for breakfast lunch and dinner! Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Have to keep it low key as the next day is the Open House!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hugs,
Cindy

Cindy,
Do you have a ballpark figure how many people may show up?

I this case I would buy enough veggies as everybody would show up,
pre-cut and pre-wash to be ready to serve, and keep it all in the freezer bags at hand.
The same with fruits.

If you have any left over, you can have it all frozen.
Pre-cut and pre-washed frozen veggies are ideal for soups, casseroles, stews etc
and from leftover fruits you can either make smoothies or/and freeze them in the Popsicle containers
or freeze whole and use for smoothies, cakes later.

Sandwiches. what kind of sandwiches you had in mind?
Anyway, try to buy anything sliced rather than cut it yourself.

For variety and an easy to make at home dip, try to mixing salsa with sour cream, see how you like it - if you like,
you may serve it as well.

Good finger food is all those ready to bake sausage rolls, mini quiches, pizza etc that can be cut into bite size pieces
and arrange onto plates.
Again, since it's already frozen you can pop one more into oven if you run out of food,
or keep it in the fridge if you don't need to.

Oh and if you like such a dip for fruits I love strawberry glaze mixed with whipping cream beaten with vanilla syrup,
although it probably doesn't matter if it's a syrup or plain sugar used for a cream.

After your whip cream is done, just add enough glaze to your liking.
Glaze also helps to keep whipping cream to last longer.

If you already haven't done that, make a list of things you need for the party, starting with

~ sitting arrangements
~ tableware, glasses, napkins, tablecloth (all plastic?)
~ decorations,
~ drinks, food,
~ music, games
~ parking arrangements
~ designated drivers?
~ possibly sleepover, if yes
~ sleeping arrangements

and whatever else I forgot Smile

Risa, Thanks. All good suggestions. I will keep them in mind when we go to Costco today. I baked myself some chocolate orange cupcakes the other day. They are so good, I will make another batch and put out for everyone. No need for designated drivers and such as we do not serve alcohol at parties. Half the attendees will be underage anyway! Head is hanging in so far. Started on Migraine yesterday, but Amerge kicked it. Very Happy

Well, I made it through the party with minimal pain. This morning, not too good. I have to clean the entire house for the Open House and then leave with the dogs for 3 hours. Should be interesting. I didnt sleep too well last night after my daughter's boyfriend asked to talk to my husband about marrying her! She is only 21! Anyway, the talk was a long one and my husband put in a bunch of conditions. Cant life just slow down a little?

Wow! Talk about everything hitting at once! Do you like the young man? Have they been dating long? Are they almost done with school or have jobs?

You're poor head has to be whirling!!!!!!! I have a feeling the boyfriend wanted a shorter timeline than hubby did!

Woo-hohohoooo- a romance on the horizon!!

Most interesting, indeed!
yep I would be tad scared about marriage at 21, too. My first marriage at 21 ended in friendly divorce after 4 stormy years
and to be honest, it was rather a parody of marriage, us both being so immature.

Sorry about your M Cindy. Have you taken anything for it yet?
I am glad, though, that yesterday it behaved for you at least.
How was the party, anyway?

Risa, Thanks, the M is still there. It was really pesky last night. Not bad, but kept me awake a lot from just being uncomfortable. I am bone tired, but not sleepy after giving up on sleep at 3 AM. Hopefully, Meagan and N will not get married for a few years and will be satisfied being "engaged". We have talked several times in general about weddings and she knows we cant afford it until Zoe is out of college.Luckily, she is very level headed even though several years younger than N. Will keep you posted as things progress.
