My dog has the runs! help!!....
Oh joy, I gave him the leftover fish yesterday, and I think either that or a new dog food did him in,
food btw supposedly very good, all natural, yikes. And now he has diarrhea.
As an Aussie, he has long fur and even if I trimmed his behind, he still streaks his butt pants.
So messy. so much work.
Can I give Imodium to dogs, please, or would Pepto-bismol help as well with the runs?
help, please!

Re: My dog has the runs! help!!....
Been there, done that! I sympathise Risa.
I remember years ago staying in a motel somewhere and our large shepherd/collie cross had the scoots, we gave her Kaopectate and she was fine after that and had no ill effects from it. I don't think a little Imodium would hurt but you might want to call a vet if you can find one open.
Good luck.

Pepto is ok as long as it's the liquid and a small amount. Expect black poo after that. Pumpkin is a more natural way of fixing the problem though.

We give our babies just plain cooked rice (cooled obviously). I read on the net that it's good to mix this with pumpkin. We've never done that but sounds like Both Milo an dI are on the right track.

Re: My dog has the runs! help!!....
Risa, Did you start the new food very gradually? Our male dog has an extremely sensitive stomach. Any change in food brings on the big D for him. I have to do it a few pieces a day for a long while. He is no stranger to the Pepto Bismal bottle. As a matter of fact, he runs away and hides when he sees it. But, it works and is safe. Also you can give him probiotics to help settle his tummy down. The funny thing is, his sister who is the pickiest eater in the world rarely gets an upset stomach and can eat anything. Hope he is feeling better soon!

Re: My dog has the runs! help!!....
Thanks guys
Well the runs were really bad, so I had to give him the Pepto right away.
I had only the chewable form at home, and I figured it anyway will be easier to sneak it between two very
thin bite pieces of tasty leftover bbq beef steak than fight him with the liquid, and indeed the trick worked.
I gave him one whole pill, because Kuba is quite a large dog - a 25 kg -55lbs or even more
so he is easily like 10-12 y.o.
Of course. He had to get the diarrhea right in the morning after in the evening I gave him through butt brush out complete
with
cutting out knots and putting on a bit of an expensive Argan Oil to make his fur less dry and shiny.
In the end, I had to cut his beautified "panties" in half, it was so bad, lol

Re: My dog has the runs! help!!....
oops Cindy, I forgot to tell you -no, my Kuba usually don't have any problems with sudden diet changing.
We never have any problems with that. knock knock knock, lol
That is why I suspect it was rather the fish that caused the diarrhea than the new food.
The Pepto worked like magic so far.
We will see how he is gonna be on the walk today - hubby took him out to the big park today.

Thank you Greeneyes!
Cindy, thanks for asking. Kuba, after I gave him one chewable Pepto pill was fine, wasn't constipated either, thankfully,
but it looks like the new food isn't agreeing with him at all.
He doesn't have diarrhea anymore but it's not perfect like before, either.
Since this is a kind of food we never ever had in the past, we think this is it for sure, so we already purchased
another brand and we'll see if there is any change.
Although there is also one more possibility, we know he sometimes bury pieces of bread he is offered in the morning
and maybe he is eating them days later, lol
But this, he is doing quite often, and all was well until the new food was introduced, so...

Re: My dog has the runs! help!!....
Risa. I am glad he is feeling better. Maybe try one of the rice based foods, they are easier on the tummy. I have never found another type of food Jake could eat without stomach problems, no matter how slowly it was introduced. He eats ScienceDiet Light Adult. My Sasha, the princess, will only eat Castor and Pollux Natural food. Wont touch any other brand. She is the pickiest dog I've ever seen and I am a Petsitter! They are brother and sister, but very different. As an aside, did you know dogs can have Celiac disease?

Really???
I had no clue, no! thanks for this bit of info. Makes me think if my friend's dog has that.... hm..
Our Kuba usually does best on Eukanuba Naturally Wild formula, the turkey one
http://www.eukanuba.com/en-US/product/turkey-dog-food.jspx
I don't know how "wild" it is, but I like to believe at least this is healthier formula than other.
And oh, I know what it's like to have a finicky dog!
My friend has a Great Pyrenees, one of the largest breeds
he looks almost identical!, and
who since puppy-hood had the runs and skin rash from practically every available commercial food!
She almost jumped out of her skin trying to find what it is.
Finally she settled on these natural frozen ground ready to eat raw meat "bricks" - know what I am talking about?
A raw diet, frozen. It's also available in round patties.
Perhaps you can try that, too? It's so frozen that worms shouldn't be a problem. You can always ask the vet.
I mean, for the dog, of course!

Re: My dog has the runs! help!!....
I have tried some of the refrigerated ones, but she didnt like those. I am afraid to try the raw ones, because I had Salmonella and it still shows up in my bloodwork. If she ever stops eating her normal one, I guess I will have to try it. Another wierd fact: Celiac disease is the reason you rarely see an Irish Setter any more. They have almost been wiped out by it!

Re: My dog has the runs! help!!....
I just give them a Tums. Just one, and if they are having a gurgly stomach I give them a tums for that. The seem to know it helps them. My vet once prescribed Pepcid for my dog, so I figure it is about the same thing. Also if they have ingested something they shouldn't have, I give them a capful of peroxide, it makes them puke straight away! I learned this from my vet as well. When my Garbo was a puppy I though she ate my engagement ring, and freaked out! She didn't puke it up, and I eventually found it under the chair!! My bad!!

Re: My dog has the runs! help!!....
haha! Garbo, is actually for Greta Garbo. We have a theme around here. It is started with Garbo, a blk and wht border collie mix, and Chaplin (as in Charlie Chaplin) our blk cat. Then we added a Marilyn Monroe (who died, from a bowel obstruction). We had a Marlon Brando (who had separation anxiety issues and now lives with an elderly Aunt who pretty much leaves the house and he is happy as a clam). And currently with us is Marlene Dietrich, my Keeshond/Shepherd mix and my little baby, Judygarlandsnowwhite ( a pure white kittie).
When we got Garbo and Chaplin we had a black and white film star theme, and it has never stopped! LOL We are idiots around here! I will see if I can dig up a few pics!
