Re: Asperger's Syndrome and Autism
Asperger's is on the autism spectrum. Children with asperger's usually have strong language and cognitive skills but are very challenged when it comes to social interaction - inability to read nonverbal cues, very little or no eye contact etc... They also can have an all-absorbing interest in a particular topic. My son grew up with a friend with Asperger's who knew everything possible about sharks. Children with asperger's are on the milder end of the autism spectrum and usually with extra assistance and therapy can function in a regular classroom.

Dear, sweet Lou Alice - remember Lou Alice, guys?
she was so intelligent, so funny, so witty and had such a sharp tongue when it was needed, lolol feisty lady...
I think she mentioned she had Asperger syndrome. I miss Lou Alice. She had gift for writting, great imagination,
artistic talent - remember her great Halloween costumes she used to make for her girls?
Wonder how and what her family is doing now....

Re: Asperger's Syndrome and Autism
Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's by John Elder Robison is a wonderful book on Asperger's written by a man with Asperger's. I learned a lot about Asperger's and it was a good read if you want a book to read.
Wendy I hope this helps. I also read a book called bu Jodi Picoult called House Rules which is a novel about a teen with Aspergers syndrome. Jodi did a lot of research on the subject and interviewed people with Aspergers before she wrote it. Very good read and informative as well.
Hoep this helps...

Re: Asperger's Syndrome and Autism
Thanks, Wendy, it is so nice someone else remember Lou Alice, too, and Ricky and the girls!
it's great you were also the off forum buddies!
I often wonder how Ricky and the girls are doing today. If you ever get in touch with them, please say Hello.
btw Lou Alice was also close with Redjen, or Nubbyjen - Jennifer who later on got married and let us participate
in the proceedings meantime,
I am not sure if you remember her. I often wonder how Jennifer is doing, too. She is from BC, like me.
Also Painfullintx - or Witchrose - Patti - who was supposed to patchwork a memory blanket for Lou Alice from the pieces we sent her.
Wonder if it ever got made. I hope it did.
Patti always sent us Mondays hugs, and I miss that too. Wish she was back here with us!
Books- - there is also an excellent book by Mark Haddon which supposedly the main character has Asperger's,
but to me it looks more like autism but I don't know, I am not familiar with these conditions-
"The Curious Incident of the Dog at The Nighttime"
http://www.amazon.com/Curious-Incident-Dog-Night-Time/dp/1400032717
This is summary, but please beware- it has SPOILERS! just the beginning will suffice:
This novel is written from the point of view of a 15 year old boy with Asperger’s Syndrome, called Christopher Boone. Christopher is a genius when it comes to solving mathematical problems or science questions. But when it comes to communicating with people or understanding them, he utterly fails. He absolutely can’t stand being touched, he can hardly distinguish between a smiling face and a crying one, he’s not able to understand jokes and when he can’t handle the incoming information anymore, he crouches on the floor and groans. Thus his life’s not a normal one; he attends a special school, has nearly no friends, follows a strict timetable for each day, lives alone with his father because his mother has died and so spends a lot of time watching TV or playing video games.
But his life starts changing when he discovers the dead body of the neighbour’s dog, killed with a garden fork. Because he likes dogs, he decides to investigate and to seek out the murderer and to write a book about the whole affair. The result is this novel.

Re: Asperger's Syndrome and Autism
My 17 year old daughter was diagnosed with Apsergers three years ago. Aspergers is a mild form of autism. She obsesses over things. She can tell you everything there is to know about Sonic the Hedgehog and has a huge collection of stuffed Sonic's. She even draws a web series comic about a character similar to Sonic. She is always drawing pictures of him. Her knowledge of animals blows me away. She can tell a breed of a dog just by looking at it and tell you what they are bred from and what their specialits are. Cats are the same way. When she becomes interested in something she will learn all she can on it. When she was little she had a stuffed rabbit. She slept with it every night, took it to school, played iwth it outside. It was always by ehr side. If she coudlnt find it she would become so aggitated that she wouldnt eat or sleep until it was found. T
Asperger individules are touch sensitive and feel pain at a greater level than most. What we think is a soft fabric might be too harsh for them.
My hubby and i have done a lot of research on it and have learned a great deal about it. SO much of her childhood makes sense to us now.

Re: Asperger's Syndrome and Autism
About not being diagnosed in time. Or ever.
I was never diagnosed as bipolar but I suspect I have mild form of it, or some variant of that.
I always had a short fuse, and flew from-to extreme moods easily.
It caused a lot of difficulties in my life, even today.
I noticed ever since I started Topamax, I became a lot more mellow and level-headed.
And Topamax does have mood stabilizing properties, so it got me thinking even more, hmmm..
