Another daughter goes down the migraine path!
I dont write a lot about my older daughter (22), Meagan. She has never had more than the occasional tension headache. Ever since she took a fall off a horse last summmer and got a concussion, she has been getting almost daily headaches. They did a CT scan at the time and it was OK.
This is her first year as a history teacher and it is hard to get through the day. She has been seeing a NP, who put her on Topomax. She is having the usual side effects that make doing her job hard. However, she says its helping the headaches. She also (with lots of pestering from me) talked to the NP about her overly loose joints.
I have suspected that she has Ehlers-Danlos or something like it since she was little. She can dislocate her shoulder and pop it back in herself. She also had severe scoliosis that required surgery. I am worried that all these might be related and am trying to figure out what kind of Dr. to point her towards. The NP agreed (grudgingly) that she has ED, but not enough to worry about. I am open to any advice.
Hugs,
Cindy

Cindy.
I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. Tough trying to do such an important job on something like Topmax--it's really tough on memory and congnitive skills.
You should probably find a really good neuro-muscular doc, and also a cardiologist to review the impacts of Ehler's Danlos. as well, a rheumatologist regarding joint issues. This is hardly a diagnosis that a NP can make.
Wishing you the best.
PF.

Re: Another daughter goes down the migraine path!
Thanks, PF. Thats kind of my thoughts, too. I will try to help her find someone good. I really thought she was in the clear as far as migraines go. Cant type too much my head is not good tonight. I have taken enough meds to kill a normal person, so I should try to sleep.

It's so tough to see those we love in pain...and watching your child is even harder then the others. I know that you will do everything within your pwoer to help her suffer less. She is lucky to have you as her migraine role model, and I'm sure she learns much on how to live with them through your own survival.

Thanks, Milo! Some days I feel like a good role model, others not so much...

Re: Another daughter goes down the migraine path!
So sorry to hear about Meagan, Cindy :[
I know what it's like to feel helpless, particularly when it comes to our children.
My daughter still have unexplained and very disabling stomach problems,
and nobody seem to want to do anything about it
And with Canadian medical system, to get thru to anybody it's unbelievable. You have to fight to get referred to a specialist
or to get merely a second opinion.
I hope you will be able to find good doctors for your daughter.
Well, since you mentioned she had a concussion, I was thinking if this can be related to hypopituitarism.
I recall a certain Mystery Diagnosis episode where a girl had a car accident, and started getting really bad ha-s among
other symptoms,
which of course were missed for a long time before finally someone put it together, and dx-ed it correctly.

I am not sure if CT scan is sensitive enough as pituitary gland is barely pea-sized, so...? re-test with MRI, maybe?
What always always, ALWAYS riled me up to no end, is how these psych a...les "gods" brand cases like that
as
"lazy and unmovtivaed"
grrrrrr
So I would really want to have Meagan's head have tested very carefully, and in every tiny detail.
Even if just to make sure

Risa, That is also something to think about. I talked to Meagan yesterday and she will be looking into finding another Dr.

I think it is always worth to have these things thoroughly checked out, as you never know.
At 'worst', you will have confirmation that her brain is fine. and that is always a good thing to know, right?
What would be worse is, if CT scan was not thorough enough but nobody was ever the wiser, I suppose.
