possible thyroid issue??? Empty possible thyroid issue???

Post  kimsmom Sat 31 Mar 2012, 7:16 am

Hello my friends. I seem to have another health problem. My daughter found a lump in the throat March 14th. I had not noticed it yet. It is just below my adams apple. I went to my primary care doctor who said it was probably nothing and it should go away in a week. I thought this is crazy, I am not going to wait to see if it goes away when a lump is a lump for a reason. So when I called and complained he sent me to an ENT.

I went to the ENT yesterday. He thinks it may be thyroid and ordered a blood test an ultrasound. He also said it should be nothing to worry about as far as cancer is concerned. This being my major concern. Hopefully next week I can get the blood test an ultra sound done.

I came home and looked up thyroid issues on the computer and I do have some of the symptoms. Besides the lump I have had body aches really bad for some time but I do have a sort of arthritis so I never thought anything of it. It also says conjestion which I have been having for the past six months when I lay down. Forgettfulness which I was blaming on old age but hey it happens so I did not think anything of that either. I have gained 30 pounds over the past two years and that I am very upset about as you can imagine for no apparent reason.

Does anyone else have a thyroid issue and can shed some light of this? The medication that I guess I would take for the rest of my life to produce more of the hormone the thyroid is supposed to produce does that cause any side effects? I read after taking the medication for 2-3 weeks you start to feel much better. Well if I start to lose weight and the other issues subside WOW would I be happy.

Any ideas or experience on these issues would be welcome.

Thanks....

possible thyroid issue??? Empty Re: possible thyroid issue???

My daughter had a small lump in her throat area and her doctor did an ultrasound and they found two nodules on her thyroid - they did some bloodwork and her tsh level was normal however, so it was assumed that the nodules were not affecting her thyroid function. Her doctor did put her on a low dose of synthroid. I was uncomfortable with her doctor prescribing a med without any indication that it was needed so we went to an endocrinologist who looked at her tests and told her that probably a third of the general public has nodules on their thyroid and they pose no risk or problem - she did however tell my daughter that one of her nodules was fluid-filled and benign but that the other one looked suspicious. It looked like it might have a blood supply and be more solid. However, she also told my daughter that it is too small to biopsy and she should wait a year and then have a second ultrasound done to see if it has grown or changed at all. She also said that thyroid cancer is very slow-growing and waiting a year would not be an issue if it turned out to be malignant. If my daughter though has any other symptoms she is supposed to give her a call - she also has discontinued the synthroid. Hope this info helps! L

I would ask for anti- TPO, if this was not done, because sometimes the other thyroid tests may turn within normal levels
but anti TPO may not,
also it may show that you may have anti-immune issues even if it is not necessarily the thyroid itself.

I have a bit increased anti TPO - a 100, but my dr settled that it is a norm for me :[, because some pple have that,
even if I don't feel well.
So nothing is done further to explain why I feel so bad all the time. "it's the norm for me" :[

Hope you are more lucky than me, Kim.

Thank you Jewish mother and Risa for your posts. I am going to look into the medication your daughter was on and see what it entails. I have symptoms of thyroid now that I have looked into it and was sort of hopeful that this medication might aliviate the issues. Our migraines are enough and now I have these other issues that are unpleasent so to finally get an answer with a medication that will actually work is a godsent. Course I do not know if this is my diagnosis yet so we shall see.

I hope all stays well with your daughter Jewish mother. It is scary to see lumps anywhere in the body.

Risa I am sorry that something cannot be done to help aliviate some of your issues. How often do you get a blood test? My doctor said things can change in three months. You might want to revisit the blood test again. Just a thought.

Again thanks ladies. I am hoping to get the tests done next week but it may take longer to get in to the ultra sound.

Hi Pam,

Sorry to hear your latest health worry, not sure if you've heard from many people since your post in March but I've been on Synthroid for over 30 years for thyroid deficiency, no side effects for me, the medication just puts back what is lacking, and it is very common, I know many people who have the same thing and are on the same medication. If it did turn out to be cancer, which I think is highly unlikely, a pastor from our church (a young guy) had thyroid cancer years ago and also my daughter in law's dad, they are both fine years later.
Take care. Smile

kimsmom,

get into see an endocrinologist asap...they are the best for glandualar issue. ENT's training isn't the greatest regarding thyroid. it can be such a tricky system.

i do have a thyroid issue, but it's linked to pituitary tumor--we need to watch thyroid closely.

ENT probably isn't the best an an endocrine issue, so I'm crossing my fingers for you.

thyroid is near and dear to me.....had a major effect on my mother's life.

Thank you all and PF I am seeing an endocrinologist on Friday. After seeing three ENTS with different answers the last one was great and sent me to and Endo. They are going to put me on synthroid (not sure of the name) a small dose. This is to hopefully shrink the noduals. I have four or five noduals and one is right on my windpipe. I am hopeing that one will shrink down. I will let you all know.

Thanks for your thoughts,

possible thyroid issue??? Empty Thyroid

Post  777Trinity Thu 05 Jul 2012, 3:37 pm

I had Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma in both thyroid glands and they were removed along with the cancer. I had gained 54 pounds. I have lost about 10 pounds since the last surgery in January 2012. I take 200mcg of Synthroid and I can tell you, you will NOT lose weight.

I wish that were true. I have eaten salads until I think I will turn green, stopped eating bread carbs etc. Nothing happens.

It appears that I cannot reverse what the thyroid cancer did and I hate it.

However, the Synthroid does help with energy level and if it weren't for the blasted migraines holding me in prison so to speak, maybe I could get out and do something.

I also have a tumor on my thyroid they are monitoring. So far it is not growing, so they're leaving it alone.
I've been on synthetic thyroid supplement for over a year. It's main effect is to decrease the drowsiness and dragginess I was feeling. It didn't help with weight loss any, mores the pity...

I hope it helps you some.

Thank you again for all your replies. The endo is NOT putting me on the thryroid drug but instead asked why the first doctor only biopsyed the one nodual and not all four? I never knew they did not biopsy the large one on my wind pipe and said I was not informed. He now wants me to take an iodine pill and have an ultra sound done on my thryroid then go back six hours later and have the ultra sound again. If it shows no cancer than we are just going to watch them to make sure they do not grow.

I was so hoping to lose weight but alas I guess I have to do it the old fashioned way. I am sorry that you both could not lose weight with it.

It seems this thyroid issue is never ending. He also said that in my case he feels that there is a 95-97% chance I do not have cancer. That was good to hear.

Again I will let you all know my progress and thank you again for your good thoughts!
