New Neuro Visit Empty New Neuro Visit

Post  7777Trinity Wed 07 Nov 2012, 3:26 pm

My GP wanted me to go see an new Neuro, so yesterday was the day. The only thing he had to offer that I haven't tried was Depakote and Botox.

He said, Depakote was one of the most toxic drugs out there and it would destroy the liver and kidneys of anyone on it longterm.

As for Botox, he said the science doesn't really support it.

The most important tidbit he had was there, there is NO NEW RESEARCH being done on Migraine treatment at the current time. He said migraine is prodominately a illness with women, if men were stricken in numbers as women were, (his words) there would have already been a cure...

My husband was there and asked him to repeat what he said, and he did. This doctor stated that the "ethics" regarding migraine research is questionable. My new Neuro is about 30 years old and a male. He said because he is male he can get away with telling us the truth.

Women have not come as far as they thought, he feels the same applies to all other "female" related illnesses. Women are disposable in our society.

Anyone a little pissed off yet??

IMHO I would find another neuro, as this lad hasn't a clue what he's talking about.
1. Botox is FDA approved for the treatment of migraine - also approved by the British equivalent of the FDA. There may be remaining questions as to the exact mechanism by which Botox alleviates head pain, but so what? It was formerly thought that the mechanism through which Imitrex and the other triptans relieve head pain was understood -- and then the theory changed. What matters is that there is clinical evidence that it is effective. As there is with Botox - else it wouldn't have received FDA approval.
2. Depakote is a first line migraine preventative and is FDA approved for the treatment of migraine. There have been no clinical studies indicating adverse long-term effects.
3. There are dozens of ongoing Migraine studies for new therapies at hospitals and universities around the world.

For a specialist to be giving a patient blatant misinformation and then mentioning "ethics" and "truth" is, to say the least, ironic. Despicable seems even more appropriate.

He did create a chuckle for me though. He sounds like a charm. The studies are swinging back towards Botox again. Smile

NO new research is probably an overstatement. Woefully underfunded in proportion to the number of people who suffer from it is certainly true. Is that because migraine suffers are largely female? No doubt that plays into it, as does the "oh it's just a headache, take an aspirin" mentality. And that fact that there aren't a lot of people dying from it ( as compared to many of the other diseases vying for research funds).

Not angry, just reality. We need to make noise about what it is costing our countries productivity, healthcare costs, lost work time and disability costs. That will get more attention than anything else to support better research funding.

whoaaa!... I trying to wrap my head around it...

Well, one thing is certain - this guy is not afraid to speak his mind, lol

AND - he might be onto something.
Historically speaking, men did wield the power over women for millennia just because they could- to begin with, just because they merely
were, and are, so much stronger physically.
We women had to fight for our rights to be heard, to be seen, to be taken seriously.

In certain parts of the world, women are still thought as a lesser being and property of men.
Unspeakable things are still done to women while at the same time being thought of as a normal thing - worse! - a right thing to be done in certain situation.
For example, a genital mutilation in some parts in Africa. A stoning or other form of murdering in some Muslim countries.
I am sure if one searched Google, there could be a plethora of crimes against women for being a woman found .

So, I find it very plausible this doctor is telling a bitter truth. A bitter fact, really...
I can only hold a tiny hope that also this doctor -if he is not merely a cold cynic, he feels prompted to do something about
this "woman situation". A woman can always hope -apart from doing something herself, that is Smile....

Btw - I am sorry Trinity, you had to listen to it....

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and replies. I have to say the new Neuro was not being rude at all, he was telling it as it is. All the studies going on today are not based on anything new in research, its just repackaged and sold to the public.

I myself appreciated his honesty and he was apalled at the situation himself. I doubt he will spend any energy attempting to change that though because big drug companies are making money hand over fist with the status quo and don't want to see a "cure", so some neuro doc is not going to be able to buck the system.

I'd fire this doc in a heartbeat Trinity.

He sounds like he's been mentored by aloof neurologists that believe migraines are a mental issue.

Plenty of men get migraines--from low hormone levels to vascular problems, to flickering flourescent lights.

Not impressed with that kind of presentation. If helpful, that's good....but a young kid at 30 doesn't know pigeon poo.

Thanks PF! I am laughing for the first time today! That young whipper snapper Neuro!

Actually he was really nice, not aloof and was brutally honest. He did not deny men get migraines, he said overwhelmingly, women out number men with this condition.

I am having an MRI of my brain next week, after that it will be another 3 years or more before I do the Neuro thing again.
