Switching from one triptan to another... Empty Switching from one triptan to another...

For years I've been taking Maxalt, until they forced me (financially) to use generic version once it hit the market.
Simply, the brand one wasn't covered anymore, lol

I've noticed the generic Maxalt was wayyy harder on the stomach.
So now I am back to Zomig, (covered), and gotta say it is quite effective, too. Works better than Maxalt used to...

Perhaps taking a break from the same triptan (particularly if it's a long term use) is good anyway,
because our bodies build tolerance to them?
Even if between them triptans there is not a much difference, there is enough for our bodies to know?
Whatever, if it works, me like it Smile

Yes I have heard that tolerance to Triptans can happen...similar to preventatives, analgesics, and of course, narcotics. The Triptans are actually each very different. Its not unusual to have some not work at all. I've heard of some folks that went through 4-6 before finding 1 that works.

I take them so infrequently its not an issue (my primary issue is NDPH, not migraine). My current choice is Relpax. They only work on a true migraine for me. I definitely have an issue finding anything preventative wise to work. Anything that did work stopped doing so very quickly. And unfortunately I have a big tolerance to narcotics.

Glad you found something to help that is affordable! My insurance also has some interesting brand preferences, and its often not just the cheapest either. I think some options would be cheaper than the Relpax, but I don't feel like trying to fix something that isn't broken. Best wishes.

I feel so gross when I take triptans. I get this tight feeling on my head and they mess with my breathing. I have stopped using them because they only work a few hours and make me feel so crappy. I should keep trying though.

I used to get good relief from all of them, especially Amerge, but now they don't do a thing. The latest one I tried was Sumavel. That was helpful w/ moderate migraines for a few months, then stopped working too. Also I hate the delivery system.

By itself, triptans doesn't work very well for me either. Not often in any case. I always take it with painkiller.

Perhaps you too, try them with a painkiller?

Just make sure whatever it is, it goes well with your triptan.

I take Frova. By itself it doesn't seem to do anything. It doesn't stop the pain, which just keeps building.
If I take the oxycodone with it, however, the Oxy reduces the pain, and a fair portion of the time the Frova will make the headache end sooner. I can often get by with just the one day of headache rather than the 48 hours they always lasted before.

The 2 Triptans I tried previously did nothing at all. Maybe I'd do better on some other triptan, but I don't know.

I also do better when I add oxycodone to the Relpax for a migraine.

That's what I use, too- oxycodone, I just was a bit chicken to admit it openly all of a sudden lol kudos to you guys!

Oxy, however, by itself doesn't work either - it HAS to be the combo.

Me, too. One Amerge and one Percocet keeps pain away for the most part. For me lasts about 8 hours, sometimes more.
