More anxiety/panic attacks with migraine- need advice Empty More anxiety/panic attacks with migraine- need advice

Hi All,

Recently, I started to have the occaisional panic/anxiety attack when the pain got bad. Usually, they didn't last long and went away pretty fast. My neuro and my psychiatrist both agree they are part of a combination of migraine and stress and told me to take an extra 1mg of Klonopin when they occurred and this works.

There has been a lot going on lately- normal life stuff, but it all happened at once- and I know that plays a part as well. It also doesn't help when I speak to my Mother and am told, "You must have taken something. Don't call if you have." It is just frustrating and I hate it. I hate that this disease can mess with everything from my ability to read to emotions. I am doing everything I know to do to deal with these migraines and the other symptoms. It is just frustrating. I have noticed that these attacks tend to occur when the headache is at its worst. It is almost like everything gets overloaded and it comes out as fear and stress or just from the pain.

Right now, I am just trying to rest and do everything I can to be ok for next weekend. One of my best friends is getting married next week and I am a bridesmaid. I go from the wedding to a family trip in North Carolina. I guess the only thing to do is to get some rest, take the meds, and pray that everything will be ok. I know it will. It is just annoying.

Pain free days,

Scone
You are not alone in this. When I get an absolute head banger on the way, I panic too because I know how long it will take to get control of that pain, about 3 hours. Sometimes when they come on so fast like from normal to excrutiating horrific pain in less than 15 minutes, I am terrified.

No one understands this part of migraine and I wish we had some doctors on this board so they could see the other side, the non clinical side of migraine. The terror of the Monster Migraine, that doesn't come just once but several times a week and month.

You are not alone and your Mom needs a major wake up call in my opinion!!

More anxiety/panic attacks with migraine- need advice Empty I definitely understand

Post  KimbaK Sat 27 Jul 2013, 7:22 pm

I don't think anyone who has not had several had migraines can understand. My moods can change anywhere from 24 hours plus before I actually start feeling the pain. Sometimes that's the way I know I've got one coming. I have anxiety sometimes but mine manifests as irritability. I won't know why at first, but all of a sudden its like every person I talk to is on a mission to tick me off. Like they are really pulling out all the stops just to give me grief. Even after I realize where the irritability comes from, I am still unable to control my mood.

I have explained this to my family so many times, but still they look at me like I'm deliberately being mean. Or if I am overly anxious or moody. They want to know "what's wrong with you?!" Drives me crazy. Like I don't have enough issues to deal with just surviving the pain and the effects of the medication.

Yeah I deal with anxiety and rage as well. Many migraineurs deal with depression of course. It's too bad people aren't more understanding. I try to stick close to those that are.

I more often get anxious about nausea attacks than the pain, but I definitely can relate.  So sorry your mom isn't being supportive sconesail.  There is a huge difference between being affected by a medication for pleasure and being affected by a medication when trying to get an ounce of relief from these horrible symptoms.

And that is even assuming you sounded affected (who knows?).  As long as the person taking the meds isn't driving, then I see no issue to take any meds offered to try to obtain relief.  I think if someone truly understood they would rather hear from you on the phone or be around you then to not, and if that requires medications due to a migraine, so be it.

Hang in there!  I can't remember; do you see a therapist regularly?  If you get a good one, they may be able to help with some coping skills with your family and chronic pain, as well as some exercises to try to lessen anxiety.

That said, if the new treatment plan doesn't end up being helpful, definitely let your doctor know.  I'm sure there are more options.  Best wishes.

I'm sorry you are dealing with anxiety scone. Anxiety is so horrible. I have learned many things about it over the years and perhaps the most important is that you are the only person that can gain control over it. Medications typically are a cause and as a treatment for anxiety are only a bandaid. Neither of those things make it any easier to deal with.

The good news is that you can train yourself to control the panic regardless of the cause. There are many awesome resources online with toolkits and workbooks that can help you teach yourself skills to deal with it. I know when my relationship with anxiety started, that I was very lucky to have spent years teaching people how to deal with it. I hope you are able to find something that works for you. The "Anxiety Workbook" is a very popular one.

Please PM me if you want me to try o find you some links.
