I awhile back you posted about a DNA blood test that helps determine which medications work best for you and those that don't. Did you remember the name of the test?

I'm obviously not Kimba but thought I'd chime in as I've had this sort of test. My pain specialist had me do a "genetic drug sensitivity test" (they have several different names but I believe "sensitivity" is the key word here). They mailed in a swab of my saliva and we got a report of different pain medications (opiate and adjunct, like beta blockers & antidepressants) and my genetic (metabolic) response.

These tests will look at a certain gene complex which controls liver enzymes which digest certain drugs to see how quickly your body filters a drug out of the bloodstream (high vs. poor metabolizer). It won't actually be able to tell if you may have an allergy to it, would have a high rate of side effects, etc. It can be a useful tool to ensure a patient gets an appropriate dose of a medication for their genetics and in selecting a better medication of a certain class.

It was interesting info, but didn't end up changing my course of treatment. Apparently the same happened for at least several dozen other patients at my clinic that they tested. I believe it cost a few hundred dollars but my insurance covered it 100% They can order the test for all sorts of classes of medications, and several companies offer it. Thank you. I was interested in having that test done. I asked my Pain Management doc about it yesterday and he said the test was very expensive and was not covered by insurance. I have Anthem BC/BS insurance. What kind do you have? I think I will try to find out if my insurance will cover the testing. Thanks again!

I have a Blue Cross Blue Shield policy. However, each is very different, and can be quite pared down or extensive, so its not a good indication. I'd first call up a company which offers and get detailed info, such as what they bill it under, before calling your insurance to ask if they cover it. I remember when I got the EOB I was surprised how little it cost, but I imagine the cost has come down a lot since they started them. Best wishes.
