I just ordered a book called Migraine in Women from Amazon. I was paging through it and I saw this:

83% of migraineurs unresponsive to triptan treatment were found to have low levels of serum ionized magnesium. Treatment with intravenous administrations of magnesium over a 2 week periods returned ionized magnesium to a normal level. Over the next 6 months, while using oral magnesium supplements, 2/3 of migraine attacks were responsive to triptan treatment.

This was from an article written in 1998 and I had never heard of it before. It is something for me to try, because triptans have not been working for me lately.

You know, I've never actually taken the time to think that if I took one thing, that it may make another effective. It seems so elementary but I never thought of it. I wonder if anyone else can did up more info on this.

Interesting bit of information.

Magnesium is often connected with M some way.
Most often that a low level of Magnesium is observed in M sufferers,
and that supplementing with M is said to help lessen M episodes.

There are, however some individuals who report the exact opposite effect of Mag supplementation - they got
an increase in M episodes.

I got one of the worst M in months today. Last night I took 3 Mag pills -a 200mg per pill I think,
mainly for its laxative properties.
Wonder if it didn't caused today's humdinger.

Not necessarily, though, as let my regular diet go to .... yellow basket, lolol over Easter weekend.
Could be the culprit, too...

I tried a neurologist who used to give me magnesium iv. That was his protocol. First three visits, I was given a mag. iv. The nurse told me it would make me feel warm and that I had wet my pants. I was uncomfortable and I didn't notice any results. I've tried over the counter magnesium, but it causes loose bowels in a big way...

Was thar dr Mauskop, by chance?
He was big on Mag., in his a book about M a large part of it was how Mag has played a role in treatment of M.
He recommends MigreLief - riboflavin (B12) magnesium and feverfew combo.
(yeah, well)


About OTC Mag causing 'loose bowels' - I read somewhere that
1. it's mainly Mag Citrate that has most "laxative" properties, and is most effective if taken on an empty stomach.
2. the longer you take it, the more you get used to the product,
and the "laxative- ity" of the Magnesium should diminish with time.

The key is to start with small doses at first, and then slowly increase.

Of course, there is no point in continuing if no matter what you do the Mag supplement has no effects on M.

I took magnesium supplements fir 6 months with no effect. But when I take them with the progesterone, the combination is better than either alone. So I think it does help.

I don't seem to get any loose bowl problems from the magnesium. But then my pain meds tend to make me constipated, so maybe it just evens everything out. Not a bad side effect if so. Wink

With IBS, I cant cope with magnesium at all.
Never managed enough to find out if it helps.

Gave me an upset like e coli, blood the works.
Clearly my system does not like it.
Dr warned me off..

Yes, some people can not handle Magnesium supplements well.
The same thing was reported on other M forum I've been to.
Some even reported Mag as their M trigger!

How about trying to find out what foods are best sources of Mag, and including them into your daily diet?

I've been taking magnesium for about a year, I think. My doctor said to start with 250 mg. and increase until I started having loose bowels. I teetered between 250 and 500 mg. for several months. Now I take 750 mg./day split in three doses. I have constipation issues, so I need the help. I'm thinking of upping the dosage again.

I had IV magnesium when I was hospitalized in Chicago. I noticed that it was particularly helpful for the pressure-type migraine I get from weather changes.
