how to get smell out of a sponge?
Hey guys quick question:
Everytime I use a sponge after about three uses it starts to really smell. How do I get that smell out and continue to use the sponge. I cannot use a new sponge everytime I use it for my dishes. I have put it in the dishwasher but that does not seem to help.
Any ideas?
Thanks...

I know that pain... been there, done that..
Rule number one, never EVER leave the sponge soaked after use. Always wring it out thoroughly after you are done with it,
best if you added just a fresh soapy water before.
.
Now how to save it - try to rinse it well with fresh dish-soap, then water,
then in a little pan simmer-boil it with water mixed with a good bit of vinegar for about 10- 15 min to kill bacteria on.
If that doesn't help, also rinse it with bleach, then rinse with vinegar to get the smell out.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Risa! I thought you would know what to do. I will try it. The last sponge was history last night. We just threw it out. This one I will do as you say and hope it lasts longer than two weeks! lol

I gave up on sponges, I just use dish rags and wash them often. Sorry, I hope Risa's advice helps!

I always use a little bleach and leave the sponge soak in with the dishcloth (I use both), but if the smell of bleach is a migraine trigger, that would be a no no!!

I just read an article about this. Hmmmm, I think it said use diluted lemon juice, then microwave for 30 sec. to kill bacteria. Very hot after microwaving!

Yup, it's all about the bacteria. Anything you do to properly kill the bacteria will keep the smell away. Good luck

I also remembered I use anti-bacterial sponge- something like this one:
like "self cleaning" oven,
the antibacterial properties are not foolproof, but indeed this sponge lasts longer than the ordinairy one.

Re: how to get smell out of a sponge?
I wish I could find a picture of it. I use the sponge at the end of a tube that is full of liquid soap and they never smell.
I just LOVE these because they are instantly ready to wash a quick cup or plate and you don't get your hands wet. I see them now everywhere hanging in the cleaning section next to sponges.
As for sponges, I found vinegar soak gets out all stinks. Good luck
