Hair dye and migraines

Post  milo on Wed 06 Jun 2012, 8:06 pm

I never learn. I've been so bored since my surgery. The only blessing is that I'm physically exhausted, so laying around for 20 hours a day hasn't been too tough. Crazy for someone like me, who is usually go, go, go. So the surgery eliminated my ability to do my hair. As a result I cut it short (I didn't have the option of tied back as it was too short already for that which would have been the best).

So my boredom and short hair created the perfect storm and I spent a day going bright blonde. I have really dark hair and it took a LONG time with the bleach on my head. I know better. I think I almost always get a reaction when I dye my hair. I foolishly told myself that bleaching was different then dying (I can pretty much rationalize ANYTHING).

So I had only two migraines in four weeks then I dyed my stupid hair. I've been struggling with my head again since. UGH....I SOOOOOOO knew better, and now I will need to eventually dye it one more time when the blonde no longer looks good (that or cut it so short that the blonde is gone, not a look I'm aiming for!!!).

Chemicals and me just don't dance well.

Bleach is one of my most reliable triggers! I dye my hair (dark hair) frequently. I try to do it on days when there are few other triggers going on. If I am careful, it doesnt bring on migraine itself. Hope you are feeling better.

Ok so this is probably a stupid question, but have you tried using those nose plugs like swimmers use? Would blocking the smell allow you to do the dying process? Or is it a chemical reaction of some kind?

Sorry, guess I didnt word that right. There isnt any bleach in my hair dye since I stay dark. I would not be able to use bleach on my head. I have to stay on another level of the house when my husband uses bleach in his laundry!

Once I worked for a Vet who made us use bleach to wash the floors down at night. One time during the Winter, I did it with the doors and windows closed. I got a horrible migraine and passed out. Had to quit the job Mad

I bleached it again yesterday but used a different product. I managed to go the day without a migraine but today it seems to be revving up. Sad

Hair Color

Post  777Trinity on Wed 11 Jul 2012, 12:25 pm

Hey Milo!

I color my hair with a product that does not have ammonia in it. It has never triggered a migraine yet.

I use Loreal Excellence Creme with Pro-Keratine Complex hair color.

You may want to switch to a different product and see if you have better results on that end.

I wish it was that easy! Sadly, I seem to react to pretty much any harsh chemical and hair dyes and bleaches are just full of them. I have found one that does the bleach job and only causes a shorter duration migraine. Ahhhhh, what we do to look good!
