Just fired my surgeon, he just doesn't know it
Last month I was admitted to the hospital on an emergency basis with severe diverticulitis. Since I was so close to rupturing I was assigned a surgeon.
I can't stand the guy. Granted many surgeons are arrogant ( my Mom was a former RN who always commented that Surgeons were God, with neurosurgeons being the ultimate supreme being), but this guy takes the cake. He loooovvves to hear himself talk. While I was in the hospital he bored me for an hour and a half talking, what I felt was inappropriately, about his personal life, his first divorce and how he took the child custody case all the way to the New York Supreme Court. Guess what, I do research for a living...I can't find any court documents relating to it.
And regardless, I DON'T want to know about the mess and dirt in my drs life. I want them to live in stress free Ivory tower where their only concern is how to take care of me.
As fast as this guy was talking and as inappropriately as he was I suspect he was using some type of " mommys little helper"
Last Friday I called his office since I was concerned I was constipated. They said no to fiber, no to colace, so I took it upon myself to go back to a liquid diet so I would have a movement. It worked.
Had an appt with him yesterday. 2 1/2 hours late. No apology, walked in running his mouth to the nurse and student Dr about how much he eats etc. Got to listen to him drone on about himself for ten minutes. Finally he asked me if I had any diarrhea. Ummmm....NO! I said I was constipated. He got a little concerned and said well, eat some prunes, and take colace. I said " really? When I called your office last week they said no". I knew no one had asked the dr.
He wanted another cat scan...would be my fourth. Yes, Dr. I realize I'm tender but I'm also blocked up with sh&$, thank you very much.
The crowning blow was when he I asked if I could eat chocolate. He went into a long lecture with his student Dr on why chocolate was addictive and we needed to think " lascivousnessly". I disgustedly said "yeah, it's supposed to be an aphrodisiac". The student Dr blushed, stood up, nervously giggled, and said "I'm outta here". I then heard him in hallway telling "if you want to be a Dr., DOCTOR, you can't embarrassed when patients ask you things". Guess what, I never asked about increasing my sex drive with chocolate, he was sexually harassing the student on my time. Oh and all this took 25 minutes, even though it was now 5:30 for my 3:00 appt. And he still had his 3:30 appt. Waiting.
Two of his staff have contacted me to see "what the Dr ordered" because they can't understand his notes. The last one asked if I was supposed to follow up with the Dr after my ct scan. I told her " nope". I also didn't tell her I cancelled I the ct scan.
I have an appt on Monday with a practice of four gastroendricrinologists who special in diverticultis and coloscopicy (which the surgeon wanted to do in six weeks. Yes, he is a Jack of all trades )
I looked him up on the net, he has moved around an awful lot, hmmm....wonder why? Oh and before he went to general surgery he was a bariatric Dr. I want a professional who specializes in my problem.
Sorry so long winded, but I guess this will also act as my diary if I decide to file a complaint. I want to wait before I get my bill first. Why? One of the things the Dr. told me during his Sunday spiel is that he is a VERY vindictive man who always gets even and he doesn't care how much money he has to spend to do it.
Nice guy, eh?

I can't sand specialists. They all pretty much drive me full-on nuts.

That sounds like a nightmare. I'm sorry to hear you are still having to deal with someone like that. I hope you feel better soon and your new specialist is much more caring.

Re: Just fired my surgeon, he just doesn't know it
I feel so relieved since I made the decision to switch Drs. Once I wrote it out and verbally told my DIL about it, it emphasized how CREEPY this guy is.
Oh, good news. I've been worried to death about the bills, I figured it was going to be at least $70,000. I had three cat scans, an ultra sound, three different drs, an emergency room visit and a seven day stay.
The bills started coming in and I had already met my out of pocket expenses and my deductible for the year and the bills so far were covered 100%! I'm holding my breath to see if that pertains to all the charges and not just the physicians.

Re: Just fired my surgeon, he just doesn't know it
Charlotte,
I just had to deal with surgeons for an entire month. My mom had a serious problems with a leg emorragy and she had to stay one month in the hospital and needed to be operated twice.
It's sooooooooo difficult to talk to surgeons and get info and it's sooooooooooo hard to keep calm while they make you feel an annoying and stupid person who's just interrupting their precious job....
Anyway, I think that your guy really wins the idiocy prize. I am glad that you fire him!
I hope that your problem with guts will soon be over so you won't have to deal with dummy doctors anymore

Oh Milo, thanks for making me laugh. I shouldn't have let that other person put me in such a bad mood, but jiminey, it was so unwarranted and out of no where.
A lawyer I very much admire told me once "don't get in a pissing contest with a skunk". It's so hard to adhere to that sometimes!

It is hard to do but so worth the effort. I find it best to just ignore idiots, but you know as well as I do that every once in a while you just have to take the bait.
