Xylitol and migraine Empty Xylitol and migraine

Looking for thoughts on this from those of us who have "tried everything". I have never eliminated xylitol. Well, that is not true. I eliminated it, have for years, but I didn't know it is often in toothpaste. I have searched for a xylitol free one (super expensive) and have been using it for a few weeks. I swear it is helping!

What are your thoughts and experiences with xylitol?

Ive never even heard of it before. I can't find much linking it to headaches on the web.
But if cutting it out is working for you, by all means go for it. I'll have to check it out on my
Ingredients lists.

It is often in toothpaste where, because it isn't food, it isn't always listed on ingredients

All artificial sweetneners make my migraines worse!

Well, I was hoping the cutting out of xylitol would be my answer but it hasn't been. I'm still not using it in my toothpaste but I worry that this natural toothpaste isn't doing the full job.

I've decided I need to loose weight to see if it is contributing to my headaches. I've been trying to loose for years and can't usually budge my weight. We ate 100% clean for over a year and I still didn't loose. Last week I severely reduced my carb intake. I know I will loose weight this way. I will drop the excess 20 lbs then return to the clean diet.

The problem is that with low carbs I can't have anything sweet. I'm ok with this, but I have just one need for sweetener. It's my yogurt. I need to find a clean version of yogurt and then find a low carb way to sweeten it. I'm pretty sure I can't have stevia, but I've been doing some reading and see that there are some super processed stevia s and some better ones. I'll buy a natural one and see how it goes, but I'm expecting a headache.

I may just have to be yogurt free until I've lost the weight.

I also have the option of xylitol, but obviously I don't really plan on trying it. There are no other "fake" sugers that I would be willing to try. What to do, what to do. Smile

I've given up trying to figure out what exactly is causing my M long time ago,
yet still now and then I can't help but wonder was it X? was it Y? or maybe it was Z? lol
I guess we will never help it but keep on doing that - trying to figure out the exact trigger.


I do notice that sugar undoubtedly is a trigger, whether it's natural or artificial. If I don't eat any sweets just fruits I am okay,
as soon as I eat pastry etc I get at least a little HA.
I am sure anything with artificial sweeteners will make HA worse.

Hope you'll find out what cause that episodes, Milo.

I use honey to sweeten yogurt. You have to stir it a lot and you're left w/ a blob on the spoon but I like the taste best too.

I'm really sensitive to the artificial sweeteners and I tolerate stevia. I've been using the truvia packets, they take care of the sugar needs, but will leave my head in peace and not taste too 'off'

When I found out 1 teaspoon of sugar is only 15 calories...I decided not to worry about sugar Smile I do use it in moderation. I can't use any artifical sweeteners, they are terrible migraine triggers for me.

So I plan when I want something sweet and eat the real deal Smile Other stuff like tea I drink as it is.

I agree wholeheartedly with you Trinity. I do not worry about sugar, either. I eat, use plain sugar in everything.

However, is good to keep in mind also that sugar is practically everything, even in medications.

Starting with breakfast cereal, unless you are doing it from scratch like rolled oats or wheatlets, there is sugar.

Try and buy unsweetened cereal - there is NO such thing. Everything is sweetened either with sugar or honey or fruits.
And no matter how you look at it- honey and fruits are sugars, too.
High fructose sugar and corn sugar count as sugars, too.

depressing, isn't it?

Breads, buns, bagels - sugar. Pickles - sugar. even some "plain" yogurts may have traces of sugar. and so on...

One really have to be mindful of sugar content while doing shopping and planning meals.

I personally don't eat sugar unless it naturally occurs in the food. If its on the ingredient list then it means it was added. I too just eat coconut sugar if I do need it (like with plain yogurt). I get worried about non-food items though, like toothpaste, mouth rinses, lipstick and medications. All of these also tend to use artificial sweeteners.
