Surgery For Me
I'm having surgery early tomorrow morning for pelvic organ prolapse. I have two great surgeons, and I'm hoping it will be all worth it. And hope I'm making the right choice in doing this surgery. It will take about four and a half hours. Three days in the hospital. Long recovery afterward.

Re: Surgery For Me
Here I am...my Ronda friends are so kind
The surgery went well. I have seven small incisions. It hurt, yes, but I knew it would get better. I think the anesthesia and pain meds were an overload for me because I don't ever take pain meds and I never drink. So it was a WOW!
IV Dilaudid made me high and very dizzy. I only asked for it about four times daily when the pain was going off the charts. It wears off very fast which means a lot of the time I didn't have anything for the pain. Couldn't go on oral pain meds until I could eat (which was on the third day).
I didn't even need pain meds when I got home. I started Ibuprofen, and that was enough. The pain goes down dramatically each day. I hardly feel it now. The surgery was a week ago, on Friday.
However, one big problem...I cannot pee. And that is a bad problem to have. Foley cathing and self cathing is no fun. I may need a second surgery to loosen the velcro sling that is holding up my bladder. I will know more in two weeks.

Re: Surgery For Me
Maybe it's the meds that prevent you from peeing? sometimes pain relievers can do that.
I hope your recovery will progress smoothly, Cheryl.
Please keep us updated if you can and wish to :]

Re: Surgery For Me
Cheryl, Glad the pain is getting better, but not being able to pee . Hope that gets better on its own with no surgery. How is Anna feeling. Are her eyes doing better? Do you know for sure if she will get the IV meds she needs?
Hugs for all,
Cindy

Re: Surgery For Me
I haven't taken any pain meds since Tuesday (not even Ibuprofen). I don't take any other meds to speak of. So I really don't think this is med related. Things are no better.
I talked to BC/BS about Anna this week, and they said our doctor should submit the codes for K infusions. But if I need surgery in two to three weeks, everything will be put on hold.

Re: Surgery For Me
Oh Cheryl, I am so sorry, that's not too good.
Any idea what may be causing this?
I too, hope it will be resolved quickly and w/o surgery, and both of you will be able to move on with your plans,
especially you Cheryl as you need to recover in peace.

Re: Surgery For Me
Can you tell if you have to urinate? Do you have the urgency you had before the surgery? I'd go for the second surgery in a heart beat rather than having to self cath.
About 20 years ago I had a similar surgery, not a sling though. Within a year it had all prolapsed again. Is there any chance that the sling will loosen up at all and let the pressure off the urethra? Then maybe I'd wait on the surgery.
With self cathing will you have a higher risk of UTIs?

Re: Surgery For Me
When you get a Foley cath, it is a sterile procedure (as much as possible). When you self cath, it is a highly unsterile procedure, in my opinion. Yes, high risk of UTI's.
Nothing feels the same as before surgery. Everything is different.
Seeing the urologist next Monday.
A Medscape article on this said to do the second surgery sooner rather than later.

Re: Surgery For Me
Healing great but still have this big problem. Yikes! I don't think it has anything to do with healing, and I don't think it is going to get better unless I have another surgery.

I'm the same--feeling really good but still having the problem. Seeing the doc on Monday, and then I'll know more.

Re: Surgery For Me
Five weeks after the first surgery, I had a second surgery to cut the bladder sling. Even though my surgeon said I only had a ten percent chance of being helped by doing this, I went for it. And it paid off. Problem solved! Yeah!
