Cleaning products and migraine...

Post  Cluelesskitty on Mon 13 Feb 2012, 1:04 am

I used to use Scrubbing Bubbles for my bathroom, but I dunno whether it's them sneakily changing the formula
or me becoming all of a sudden sensitive to its smell,

but it started bother me to the point I can't use it anymore.

Unfortunately a lot of cleaning products have this similar peculiar smell, and I can't use them either.

What do you guys use for a quick and easy clean up - bathtub, sink etc, that can be sprayed on and left for w while
and smell nice?

Risa

Risa, I have the problem with cleaning products, also.Bleach and ammonia are the worst! I have always been able to use the Scrubbing Bubbles, though. Havent used it in a while since surgery. I hope they havent changed it! I have good results with some of the "green" products as they are based on things like vinegar.

I like Clorox Green Works. It works well on many surfaces and doesnt bother my head. You can research making your own cleaning products with vinegar, Murphy's Oil soap, borax, etc. I did it for years until I could tolerate some pre-made ones again. Hope you find one that works for you.
Hugs,
Cindy

Risa, I've been using a lot of straight white vinegar (I load up on it at Costco). It works great for mopping floors with a microfiber mop. I use it in the washing machine, too, like fabric softener and sometimes instead of bleach.

Comet, so far, doesn't bother me, so I use that in the bathroom (it doesn't spray on and takes a bit more elbow grease, but the smell isn't so strong). I tried Melaleuca products, which are supposed to be green, but the odor really bothers me, almost always triggering migraine. Scrubbing Bubbles and others like it really bother me.

I think maybe they change the scents or the formulations on some of the products because all of a sudden they either seem to have a stronger odor or it is an instant trigger.

Have you noticed the laundry detergents (I always used Tide) seem to change their scents all the time? It drives me crazy. I find one that I like, and then it's changed and I can't handle the smell. I've switched to Costco's Kirkland environmental brand, and it seems to have a pretty neutral smell but cleans as well as Tide for me (we have well water).

Happy cleaning! bounce

i know what you mean about the products and the smells and changes! the other day i needed to scrub the tub and didn't want to use the stinky stuff - so just took some of greenworks dishwashing liquid with some baking soda, added a little bleach, and worked really well - better than the pricier stinky stuff. know bleach might bother you, but could try without it.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys!
I will try them, also I just remembered I once had this German product that smells very fresh and delicate
only I can't recall the name. It was a bit pricey, though, that's why i stopped buying it,
but if I ever find it again I will let you guys know, too.

And yeah, Tide, and other brands as well - gosh why do they keep changing what's good!?

I currently use these "organic" or "bio...whatever" softener products that have acceptable smell.
But as a laundry soap, I spend $$$ for German Persil soap at our local Polish store.
It's expensive due to being imported but smells nice and washes very good. It's economical, too.

Wow Risa...that was your 1000th post!!!!!!

I responded to this post already but it seems to be missing. Weird

This house has both kinds of cleaning products. The deal is that the stinky stuff isn't supposed to be when I'm home or going to be home. I would get rid of them completely but someone in the house insists on them.

I buy a lot of natural products and find there are some nice smelling ones that do the job. Locally, you may want to check out the "method" brand. They have some awesome stuff that smells great based on essential oils.
