Need voodoo chicken shakers
Hi All,
The head has been horrendous lately. I have an appointment with the pain doctor tomorrow. As Ultram is no longer working, it is time to switch medications- I just can't live like this. My neuro suggested Nycynta- it is either that or go back on Morphine. Either way, I am desperate and I need help. Please shake the voo-doo chickens, pray, whatever else we do and hope that the dr will help! Not sure what to do if he doesn't/
thanks,

Re: Need voodoo chicken shakers
Nucynta is more hit & miss than Morphine. I had a particularly tough time with it even on a tiny dose, getting bad dizziness, which I don't get with any other opiate (and I think I've tried them all).
Plus, its brand name, while morphine is comparatively cheap. Doctors are going more for the new meds like Nucynta & Opana as they are supposed to be less risky for abuse, addiction, etc.
Since you're in a tough spot, I'd vote for what worked in the past. If you didn't have that to turn to, then I would have suggested to go with something new. I hope you have a good appointment!
If this pain doctor isn't helpful, definitely find another one. They should keep trying something each appointment until they make a significant dent in the pain. Best wishes.

Re: Need voodoo chicken shakers
You've got my poultry on the move for you.
I take Nucynta, for ovarian cysts. I like it because it doesn't make me violently ill (hydrocodone) or make me start having trouble breathing (hydromorphone). After the FDA pulled Darvon off the market, it's been my only narcotic option, so I've been grateful it came on the market when it did.
I do get the opiate itchys from it, so I take it with benedryl, but a little itchy is manageable. And if I get in the habit and just keep taking it after the cyst pain's subsided, I've found I get a wicked rebound headache, but as long as I'm hurting more than a 4 when I take it I don't, I have no reason why.
Whichever medicine you and your doc chooses, I hope it helps you out. Pain Sucks!

Re: Need voodoo chicken shakers
Hi All,
Thanks for all the voo-doo chicken shaking, thoughts, etc.
I saw my pain doctor this morning. The appointment went really well- I think it helped that I called earlier in the week to tell them how bad the pain was. Anyway, we decided to change to Nucynta. Right now, he put me on 75mg of Nucynta four times a day. I will see him again next month and if it works, we will go to the Extended release version and use the immediate release version for breakthrough. (if it doesn't work, I would probably go on a different long acting med. I am just glad that they were so understanding and willing to help. (granted, he is a great dr and his staff are very nice as well.)
So far, it is helping a great deal (I am knocking on wood, crossing fingers, and praying as I write this.) But I am feeling a little better since I took the first dose this morning.

Re: Need voodoo chicken shakers
I'm glad it's helping. Info for the back burner of your brain, 75mg is the middle dosage. 50mg is the low dose, and 100 every 4-6 hours is the max on the immediate release. If it's the immediate release, you can split the pills if needed too. Obviously don't split the ER. My doc started me on the 50s, just to make sure I wouldn't have another med reaction, and then raised me up to the 100s, since he know I'd split them if needed.

Re: Need voodoo chicken shakers
Hi All,
Thanks for all of the voo-doo chicken shaking! I love the hat- ultimate voo-doo chicken.
I am on 75mg four times a day. So far- it is still working (crossing fingers, knocking on wood, and praying as I type this.) I have found that I need it about every 4-5 hours to keep the pain under control. I also haven't had to take as much Klonopin or other medicine for migraine since I started Nucynta. I may even call and see if we can go ahead and switch to the long acting version- as this would eliminate the ups and downs and hopefully allow me to stay on top of the pain. Anyway, I am thankful for any relief.
