Frustrated with neuro, need some advice Empty Frustrated with neuro, need some advice

Hi All,

Well, I am a little frustrated with my current neurologist situation.

The neuro that I saw for several years in the past is returning to UAB. I had hoped that I would be able to see him again. However, it turns out that he is mainly doing procedures and is not following patients, is only part time, and therefore can't help me. I spoke to his secretary and asked if he would be willing to recommend someone or to possibly see me for a one time consult. Unfortunately, he won't see me. She did say he would call if he thought of someone who could help or if he changed the way he practices- apparently, he is directting a research study and can't help me.

My current neuro is cutting way back on hours and on patients. I haven't been at all happy with his PA, whom I have seen twice, when I was scheduled to see him. The last time I saw her, she informed me that I should wear a helmet due to the number of times I faint and then said I fainted because "I wasn't doing enough with my life. " I was supposed to be seen in May, and asked to be seen by the neuro instead of the PA, and that appointment still needs to be scheduled. I will call again. He is pretty much the only headache guy in town. I really need a headache specialist to help with the migraines.

I am not sure what to think anymore. I had some hope when I heard that my old neuro was back and then was able to schedule an appointment for the end of august. But, I really felt kind of lost today when I got the call and was told he wouldn't see me. I know that no one person can fix this, but I do believe in having some competant people around to help with this. My PCP and pain drs are good, as is the current cardiologist an the neuro is ok, but I guess I was just hoping for some help. I suppose the only thing to do is to keep going and see if there is a neuro who might be willing to take me on, or at least do a consult or certainly when the current one retires.

I really hate having to go through this again.

Thanks for letting me v ent and I would love any idea.

Pain free days,

Sounds like the UAB new/old neuro is giving you the pass-off. Don't put any hopes in seeing him. It sounds like you are going to have to go on the hunt to find another neuro out of town. Sometimes that's just how it is. It is off-putting, costly, and really takes the wind out of your sails, but what are you to do? Be at the whim of some doctor and his reimbursement schedule.

The answer is no. Find a new doc. Keep on the hunt, and keep working.

Neuros have changed their methodologies in treating M. So you have to find a doc that meets your needs as well as established guidelines. Unless you're going to pay cash to go to an esoteric private clinic, there aren't a whole lot of options. Even then the results seem to be very short lived, and just leave you with empty pockets.

Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.

I know the old neuro is definitely giving me the pass off. He is at the University about 90 miles away. I am gooing to see if there is another neuro who would be willing to treat migraine there. I have had good luck with some of the drs there. If not, I will have to look elsewhere.

My current neuro is local and he is the one who is really cutting back on hours and is probably retiring soon. He is pretty much the only headache guy in town. So I will stay there while looking for a new one. He will write for the meds I need right now and will do the IV Depakan. But I am going to keep looking and see if I can find a new neuro.

That is the only thing I know to do. It is just frustrating.

I have compassion for the frustration you are going through. I guess for all of us, we keep hoping that some doctor, somewhere is going to hit on the right combination of meds to decrease if not eliminate the migraines. Honestly, I think we exhaust our PCP's and Neuro's. They can't find the answer either and it has to be deflating for them as well.

Sometimes I see my self as a "crying 2 year old" hanging onto it's mother's leg, she can't get loose and the more she tries to pacify or comfort that 2 year old, the more it cries and her efforts are to no avail. Both are frustrated....patient and doctor.

Maybe your old Neuro had just run out of options with you situation. I agree, keep looking and don't stop hoping and keep praying!
